When a person feels safe, seen and supported, the vagus nerve helps release oxytocin-the hormone responsible for effective contractions, pain modulation and emotional bonding. When stress, fear or unresolved trauma are present, the nervous system may shift into fight, flight or freeze. This can contribute to:
